SLAC RSB Science Support Building

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is operated by Stanford University on behalf of the Department of Energy and is a hub of innovation with research facilities that attract thousands of scientists from all over the world each year. The Design Partnership provided full architectural services on the new SLAC RSB Science Building, a two-story science and research lab located at the center of SLAC’s distinguished technology campus.

The design creates a generic layout that accommodates a range of research types from bio/chemical engineering, biophysics, or material research space. The lab space is divided into individual labs with designated lab support spaces or as a large individual lab with shared support labs on either end. Our team included a flexible wet laboratory that can be easily changed as programs need change while supporting and advancing SLAC’s pioneering work by codifying three separate science and research programs that are architecturally interpreted as blocks, composed in a beautiful and efficient facility. A central spine of the building acts as a social artery and promenade that draws together researchers and scientists while inspiring collaboration in their experimental and theoretical research.
